They are found in East Asian countries like India, Nepal and many more. They are beautiful birds who can fly. Only a few get to see these birds fly though! They don’t usually fly like normally birds do, they only fly when they sense a threat rather than flying for pleasure.

Peacocks are the national birds of India. They represent beauty and elegance. They are considered as one of the most beautiful birds of India. Their body is filled with variant colors. They have white patches near their eyes. But the most notable feature in a peacock is its extravagantly beautiful tail, which people also call the train. Their tail only develops completely after four years of hatching. There are 200 odd display feathers that grow from the back of them and is part of enormously elongated upper tail coverts. The tail feathers are modified so that they do not have the barbs that hold the feathers in place and are therefore associated loosely. The back wings of peacocks are grayish in color and are short and dull. Indian Peacocks thighs are light orange colored, and they have spurred on the leg above the hind.

Nature of Indian Peacocks:

The Indian Peacocks are best known for their elegant display of the feathers which is believed to be
driven by sexual selection. The peacocks spread their tail in the shape of a fan and quiver them during courtship display. The more the number of eyespots a male has, the more are the chances of him mating is. These animals are omnivorous and rely on eating insects, seeds; fruits and even small mammals. They move around in small groups which has one male and a few females. They sleep up above in the branches of the trees so they can escape the predators lurking in the jungle in nights. The males are extremely agile on their foot despite the presence of a long tail.

Indian Peacocks have no specific season for breeding and mating is generally dependant on rain. They are very polygamous in nature and lay around four to six eggs at a time in the ground, preferably in a shallow hole and incubate those eggs for 28-30 days which means almost a month. The chicks that are born afterward are dependent on their mothers for at least six to nine weeks and feed on their mother’s mouth itself. Initially, it’s hard to determine which chick is a male and which is a female. But later on, males start to develop the distinctive plumage, and they mature at around four years of age. The average lifespan of these birds is in between fifteen to twenty-five years. The peacocks have a very sharp and shrill voice, and they are always very alert in nature towards everything they feel is a threat.

The threat to Peacocks:

Though there has been a threat to peacocks. Their feathers are always in great demand for decorative purposes. And the demand keeps growing and growing only with the population rising simultaneously. Peacocks are hunted and killed by poachers for meat as well. And that is why the Indian government has been granted special conservation efforts keeping in notice its status as the National bird of India.

These birds can fly but don’t do it very often, only in the times of crisis. Every person in the world adores and acknowledges their beauty.
